In 1983, SeaWorld San Diego staged the World Record High Dive Challenge, broadcast on ABC’s Wide World of Sports. Six athletes attempted a daring 172-foot plunge into a 52°F saltwater pool. Five of them, Rick Winters, Rick Charls, Dana Kunze, Bruce Boccia, and Mike Foley, successfully tied the standing world record, pulling off somersaults despite the serious risks, especially after injuries from the 170-foot attempt the year before.
