In Case You Missed It 🚀 NASA tested new production RS-25 engine No. 20002 on Nov. 12 at the Fred Haise Test Stand at NASA Stennis. Test teams fired the second flight RS-25 engine for 500 seconds, the same amount of time RS-25 engines fire during launch of the SLS (Space Launch System) rocket for NASA Artemis missions. The hot fire reached 111% of its rated power for the engine. As part of NASA’s Artemis campaign, the agency will send astronauts to the Moon to prepare for future human exploratio

A water system activation at the Thad Cochran Test Stand (B-2) on Jan. 30 at NASA Stennis helped capture critical data to support testing a new SLS (Space Launch System) stage expected to fly on the Artemis IV mission. The activation milestone tested new cooling systems that were added to the stand for the future Green Run test series of NASA’s exploration upper stage. On March 18, 2021, the core stage for the first flight of NASA’s SLS (Space Launch System) rocket underwent a hot fire test on the B-2 Test Stand at NASA Stennis. The four RS-25 engines fired for the full duration of 8 minutes during the test and generated 1.6 million pounds of thrust while consuming more than 700,000 gallons of liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen propellants. The hot fire test was the final stage of the Green Run test series, a comprehensive assessment of the SLS core stage prior

An October 2020 time lapse of the 212-foot tall SLS (Space Launch System) core stage on the B-2 Test Stand at NASA Stennis reveals a stunning night sky. The core stage, flown on Artemis I in November 2022, was designed to operate for the roughly eight-minute launch from ground and ascent to Earth orbit, reaching speeds of faster than 17,500 mph, or nearly 23 times the speed of sound (Mach 23), and more than 530,000 feet in altitude before it separated from the ICPS (interim cryogenic propulsion

A sight to behold! 🤩 ▶️ The Thad Cochran (B-1/B-2) Test Stand at NASA Stennis is a dual-position, vertical-firing facility built in the 1960s to test Saturn V rocket stages that carried humans to the Moon during the Apollo Program. The B-1 side is equipped for single-engine tests. The B-2 side is designed to test rocket stages. ▶️ The test stand is anchored in the ground with 144 feet of steel and concrete. As constructed, the soft core of the B-2 side of the stand was about 290 feet tall. The

September 2025 marks the birth of the NASA Stennis Federal City 55 years ago in 1970. NASA Stennis Associate Director Rodney McKellip highlights how the NASA Stennis Federal City supports the work of the U.S. Department of Defense. While NASA Stennis is America’s largest and premier rocket propulsion test site, the NASA Stennis Federal City also is home to more than 50 resident tenants that include federal and state agencies, commercial companies, academic institutions, and support contractors.

The force is strong with this one. Did you know an RS-25 engine generates as much as 418,000 pounds of thrust at sea level (as mounted on the Fred Haise Test Stand) when NASA fires up an RS-25 engine at NASA’s Stennis Space Center near Bay St. Louis, Mississippi? When NASA sends the SLS (Space Launch System) rocket on future Artemis missions, four RS-25 engines will generate a combined 1.6 million pounds of thrust at liftoff and 2 million pounds of thrust during ascent. In #StarWars, the force i

RS-25 engines powering NASA's SLS (Space Launch System) rocket use liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen as propellants – the same elements that combine to create water (H2O). For an RS-25 engine test, liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen are mixed in the engine combustion chamber and ignited, which results in extremely high-temperature exhaust (up to 6,000 degrees F) exiting the nozzle into the flame deflector at a very high rate and pressure. Hundreds of thousands of gallons of water also are flowing
