  • Associated Press
    Associated Press
    A not-for-profit news agency also known as AP. Microsoft Bing uses AP to collect official data for US election results.
  • Cartogram
    A map that measures specific data for a geographic area. For example, the number of representatives given to an area during an election.
  • Electoral College and votes
    A group of electors that appoint the president and vice president every four years. The Constitution requires each state to appoint the same number of electors as their congressional delegation (house representatives and senators). To elect the president and vice president, a simple majority of at least 270 electoral votes is required out of a total of 538 possible votes.
  • Expected vote
    An Associated Press (AP) estimate of how many votes have been counted during an election. To learn more about how the AP estimates the expected vote,visit their website
  • Incumbent
    An official currently holding office.
  • Recount
    A re-tabulation of votes that happens after an election. When the margin of victory is narrow, it happens automatically. In most other cases, it happens when someone like the losing candidate or their party asks for a recount. In the United States, recounts rarely change election results.
  • Runoff election
    A second election that occurs when no candidate in the first election reaches the threshold required for victory.
  • Swing state
    A state where the two major political parties have similar levels of voter support. These states are considered especially important to determine the results of a presidential election.
