A snowstorm blew into the mid-Atlantic states Tuesday, causing dozens of accidents on icy roads, prompting school closures and stoking worries about possible power outages. The heaviest snowfall — up to 10 inches (25 centimeters) — was expected in parts of Virginia and West Virginia.

The storm will impact about 200,000 square miles with snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour in some areas. And more winter weather arrives midweek.

As the Mid-Atlantic digs out from a snowstorm, a new winter storm is underway in the Plains that will move through the Midwest before slamming the East Coast.
