President Donald Trump is expected to sign an executive order on Friday designating English as the official language of the United States, according to the White House. The order will allow government agencies and organizations that receive federal funding to choose whether to continue to offer documents and services in language other than English,

The order will rescind a mandate “that required agencies and recipients of federal funding to provide extensive language assistance to non-English speakers,” the White House said.

The United States has never had an official language. English has become dominant, but it coexists with dozens of other languages in a country forged by immigrants of very diverse backgrounds. It has never needed the seal of official language.
