Control of the assembly in New Delhi is set to change hands, a feat that eluded the Indian prime minister’s Bharatiya Janata Party for nearly three decades.

The Bharatiya Janata Party won a historic mandate in Delhi polls on Saturday and returned to power in the national capital after 27 years by ousting Aam Aadmi Party.

Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party is expected to win 48 of the 70-member legislative assembly, where it was leading, according to the Election Commission of India’s website. BJP is reclaiming Delhi after almost three decades.

The party campaigned on the promise of combating corruption and enhancing civic amenities for the common man. It secured a decisive victory in the 2020 elections, winning 62 out of 70 assembly seats, while Mr Modi’s party managed only eight.
