A Mexican national has been arrested and charged in federal court with voting in multiple Alabama elections despite not being a U.S. citizen, authorities said.

Alabama lawmakers may consider legislation to change how the state’s primary elections are conducted, one that would require voters to register with a party before participating in that party’s primary.

The Department of Justice says a man who is legally a Mexican citizen voted in multiple U.S. elections. He has since been arrested and has appeared in federal court.

A bill that would allow Alabama voters to cast ballots in person up to 10 days before Election Day has returned to the state legislature.
