Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.) clashed sharply with secretary of Defense nominee Pete Hegseth over his infidelity and reports of public drunkenness and drunkenness on the job, repeatedly pressing Hegseth on his character and judgment.

The Oklahoma Republican tried to defend Hegseth against allegations of sexual misconduct and alcohol abuse. It didn't go especially well.

Overall, Republicans were the more serious party at these hearings. The committee chair, Sen. Roger Wicker, did note that we live in the most dangerous security environment since World War II. Sen. Tim Sheehy did mention shipbuilding. Sen. Ted Budd did ask about warplanes. Sen. Eric Schmitt did ask about drones.
