When Will Vest entered Sunday's game against the Reds in the top of the eighth with one out, the Tigers were in a good position to steal a series win despite an 11-1 blowout the night before.

Vest lasted in Seattle until only early July, when his ERA had risen to 6.17 after 35 innings. For the Tigers in 2022, Vest has a 1.17 ERA with three walks and 20 strikeouts in 15⅓ innings.

Vest pitched in Saturday night’s game against Nashville and had a clean, single-inning stint: no hits, no walks, one strikeout. It dropped his Toledo ERA to 4.76 after five games and 5.2 innings.

Vest threw 24 sinkers last season and has already thrown 20 this year, all to right-handed hitters. Adding that to the mix, he’s improved his ground ball rate overall to 52%, up from 44% last year.
