More than three dozen people are dead after a cloudburst triggered a flash flood in Kashmir and other nearby areas.

At least 56 people are feared dead in a flash flood triggered by sudden heavy rain that devastated a remote village in the restive Himalayan region of India-administered Kashmir.

Heavy rains across various districts in Jammu and Kashmir have triggered flash floods in many rivers and drains, along with incidents of landslides and traffic disruptions, officials said on Wednesday.

Flash floods caused by torrential rains in Indian-controlled Kashmir have left at least 56 people. One official says rescue teams scouring the devastated Himalayan village of Chositi brought at least 300 people to safety.

Across Pakistan, monsoon rains that began in late June have been heavier than usual, killing at least 645 people. Four hundred of those deaths were in the northwest alone, where narrow valleys and river-carved gorges funnel rainwater into sudden torrents.

The Meteorological Centre Srinagar on Wednesday issued a detailed weather forecast for Jammu and Kashmir, cautioning residents about the likelihood of heavy rains and possible flash floods in coming days.
