As traders worldwide wait to see if U.S. President Donald Trump once again holds off on putting new tariffs on Canada and Mexico, the head of the U.S. Treasury Department has highlighted one potentially promising avenue for America’s neighbors.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent encouraged Canada on Friday to follow Mexico in matching U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods as the two U.S. neighbors sought to avoid punishing 25% U.S. tariffs due on Tuesday over fentanyl trafficking.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum says she hopes to speak with U.S. President Donald Trump now that he has announced plans to impose tariffs on Mexico and Canada starting Tuesday.
