President Donald Trump’s efforts to force Republicans to pass a partisan overhaul of voting laws risks bringing congressional business to a halt with no clear path to success, Senate Majority Leader John Thune warned Monday.

A coalition of Trump supporters has been pushing versions of the SAVE America Act, with its proof of citizenship provisions a longtime goal of the president’s MAGA coalition. Trump also warned the House GOP that their existing version of the bill is inadequate. “We’re not going to sign a watered-down version,” he said.

The GOP appears stuck between a rock and a hard place when it comes to the legislation the party has dubbed the “SAVE America Act.”
