Mayor London Breed acknowledged on Thursday that Daniel Lurie, a first-time candidate, would succeed her in office.

Incumbent Mayor London Breed trailed Levi's heir and philanthropist Daniel Lurie in early returns in San Francisco's mayor's race, a contest in which homelessness and property crime emerged as pivotal issues.

San Francisco’s first Black female mayor conceded the race for mayor to Levi Strauss heir Daniel Lurie after a brutal campaign over homelessness and public safety.

Like Goldman – a former Manhattan federal prosecutor – Lurie was elected without any prior experience holding public office. The two men are related through Lurie’s stepfather, Peter Haas, and Goldman’s grandmother, Rhoda Haas Goldman, who were siblings.

While Breed, the first Black woman mayor of San Francisco, was seen as among the most progressive leaders in the city's history, Lurie took a more moderate, centrist approach throughout his campaign. Having survived allegations of buying the race, Lurie will now look to implement a series of changes when he takes office on Jan. 6.

Daniel Lurie, a local nonprofit founder and an heir to the Levi Strauss & Co. fortune, will become San Francisco’s 46th mayor. He unseated incumbent Mayor London Breed, a fellow moderate Democrat, during Tuesday’s general election in the 14th round of ranked-choice voting.

Lurie beat out 14 other candidates, including Breed and former interim Mayor Mark Farrell, as well as supervisors Aaron Peskin and Ahsha Safai.

Levi Strauss heir Daniel Lurie, who has never held public office, promised Friday that as San Francisco's mayor he will do what seasoned politicians before him have not -- clean up city streets and bring an end to its open-air drug markets.
