John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan were relieved that 49ers’ top pick Mykel Williams escaped the NFL Draft’s top-10 slots to land on their recalibrating defensive line.

The big DE provides a real boost on the defensive line, giving the 49ers a much-needed mismatch on the edge as he and Bosa build a true tandem on outside. While Bosa will still need some coverage at defensive tackle, Willliams gives them a blue chip caliber prospect at edge.

GM John Lynch said the player’s size, athleticism, toughness, versatility and character that showed through on film and during a visit to the team facility.
