Harjinder Singh received commercial driver's licenses in Washington and California despite his illegal status before alllegedly causing a deadly Fort Pierce crash.

Singh is accused of being behind the wheel of a tractor-trailer attempting a U-Turn on the Florida's Turnpike on Aug. 12. The incident led to a crash and the death of three people in another vehicle in St. Lucie County. Singh is being held in a California jail on no bond.

After receiving his work permit, Singh was able to secure a Commercial Driver’s License in California, DHS said.

In California, CDL exams are offered exclusively in English, while Washington allows them in English, Spanish, Russian, or Serbian-Croatian.
