President Trump is expected to sign an executive order on Friday designating English as the official language of the United States.

The United States has never had an official language. English has become dominant, but it coexists with dozens of other languages in a country forged by immigrants of very diverse backgrounds. It has never needed the seal of official language.

The order will rescind a mandate “that required agencies and recipients of federal funding to provide extensive language assistance to non-English speakers,” the White House said.

A federal judge on Thursday ordered the Office of Personnel Management to rescind earlier instructions telling agencies to “promptly determine whether these employees should be retained at the agency.

A federal judge ruled that the terminations at agencies including the Department of Defense were probably illegal.

Thousands of workers have been fired by the Trump administration as part of its effort to slash the federal workforce.
